Time calculator

Work Hours Calculator

Calculate worked hours between start and end clock times, minus break minutes, including overnight shifts that cross midnight.

Clock times and dates stay in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How the calculation works

Enter start and end clock times plus unpaid or logged break minutes. The tool subtracts breaks from the clock span and reports duration as hours:minutes and as decimal hours (rounded to 2 places) for timesheets and contractor invoices. When end is earlier than start, the span wraps overnight so night coverage still totals correctly. Timezone and DST are not applied; this is clock arithmetic on one local day or overnight wrap. Pair with Timesheet Calculator when you need a week of rows instead of one shift.

How to use it

Enter the start clock, end clock, and break minutes you want subtracted. Read the worked duration and decimal hours, then copy the figure into your timesheet or invoice. For overnight coverage, keep end earlier than start so the wrap is intentional. Convert the decimal result with Decimal Hours Converter if the destination form wants h:mm only.

Assumptions

Breaks are minutes you enter yourself. Timezone and DST are not applied; this is clock arithmetic on one local day or overnight wrap. Paid vs unpaid break policy is your call, not the tool’s. One break field means you sum multiple pauses yourself.

Worked example

Input

09:00 to 17:00 with a 60-minute unpaid break (same-day)
Also: 22:00 to 06:00 with a 30-minute break (overnight wrap)

Output

Same-day: 7h worked (7.00 decimal hours)
Overnight: 7.5h worked (7.50 decimal hours)
Math: clock span minus break minutes. End earlier than start → crosses midnight.

Quick comparison

Option Detail
Same-day shift End after start; break minutes subtract from the span.
Overnight wrap End before start; span crosses midnight, then breaks subtract.
Decimal hours Same worked time shown as 7.00-style figures for forms.
Week totals Move daily results into Timesheet Calculator when you need a week sum.

More scenarios

  • Day shift 09:00-17:00 with a 60-minute unpaid lunch → 7.00 worked hours.
  • Overnight 22:00-06:00 with a 30-minute break → 7.50 worked hours.
  • Split lunch plus coffee into one break total before submitting a timesheet.

Practical use cases

  • You logged 09:00-17:00 with lunch and need the decimal hours for a remote timesheet.
  • An overnight support shift crossed midnight and you need a clean total.
  • You are filling a contractor invoice and the clock span is messy.
  • A teammate asks how many hours you actually worked after a long break-filled day.
  • You need net worked time before feeding hours into a weekly timesheet total.

Limitations

No timezone or DST conversion. No calendar import. No automatic multi-break detection. Does not decide whether a break is paid. Cross-midnight wrap is based only on clock order, so a mistyped same-day end time can look like a long overnight shift.

Common questions

How does overnight mode decide to wrap?
If the end clock is earlier than the start clock, the span is treated as crossing midnight. Same-day shifts should keep end after start.
Are breaks subtracted automatically from my calendar?
No. Enter unpaid or logged break minutes yourself. The calculator does not import calendar events.
Does this handle multiple breaks?
Sum the break minutes into one field. The tool subtracts a single break total from the clock span.
When should I use Timesheet Calculator instead?
Use this tool for one shift. Use Timesheet Calculator when you have several daily rows or need a regular vs overtime split.
